Hambone Willie Newbern
03Oct10
Not much is known about Hambone Willie Newbern, and much of what we do know comes from Sleepy John Estes whom Hambone mentored. He made a name for himself around Brownsville, TN – where Newbern played country dances.
Undoubtedly you’ve heard the blues standard ‘Rollin’ & Tumblin’, Newbern recording one of the first known versions of the song in 1929. It was recorded on his lone session.
What is known of his life is scarce and the little knowledge we know makes Robert Johnson’s life seem well documented.
We do know he was ill-tempered and had a loose tongue, dying allegedly in a prison fight circa 1947.
He was a intricate player and his impact on blues music will not be forgotten.
